Concrete thinking represents a level of thought that is most often focused upon gathering pieces of information and reciting it back to others. Maria’s ability to demonstrate skills such as a recall of facts about a story is an example of a child who is engaged in concrete thinking. Children with superior cognitive abilities will develop these abstract thinking skills at an earlier age and to a more advanced degree. Maria is exhibiting some difficulties in school that are often noted in children with visual impairment. As the world becomes more complex, they begin to experience more difficulties in performing at their potential. These problems may be related to a specific learning disability or cognitive abilities.

One who is a concrete thinker may look at a a painting as a picture of a house. Both parents and teachers often recognize these difficulties for the child with VI. Prior to that time, most tasks involve asking a child to answer a series of questions about an activity or story. Typically these questions involve gaining simple information about who performed an activity and what happened as a result.

These defining aspects of human intelligence are all the result of the faculty to ‘abstract’ – the unique ability of the human mind to organize information beyond the immediate sensory reality. As we constantly face billions of bits of information streaming in from our senses, our brain must recast this maelstrom into simpler structures. Research in artificial intelligence suggests that even the best of our current algorithms struggle to handle the complexity of everyday, real-life problems.

MIT researchers reported in the June 21 issue of Nature that they have pinpointed how and where abstract thoughts are represented in the brain. One of the simplest ways to use abstract thinking to solve a problem is to reframe the question you’re trying to answer. You might already be thinking in an abstract way without even knowing it.

There are mental disorders that can make a person think more concretely. Most people do have some form of abstract thinking, as thinking in only literal terms is a serious social impairment.
